Wow it's been a while!

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I posted for many reasons and none of them actually good. So... After the new year...It's on! But for a teaser for next year...
On Jan 6th, I will start leading a study on the book "Created to be His Helpmeet" by Debi Pearl. I will be blogging on the subject each week, so stay tuned for that. I am praying God will show up and do what He does best.... Change lives, particularly marriages! We are so bombarded with the world's idea of what a wife should be, it will be enlightening to see what God has to say on the subject! Looking forward to it and asking you to join me in prayer!
Looking ahead,
Let the Son shine,
Brandee

How we "do" school

Since I have many friends that are homeschooling and we are always curious about how each other are "doing" it... I thought I would fill in the ????? for you.
I have been testing a new school schedule for this first month (or so) of school and I am ready to reveal my processes and why I have chosen them. First, I have not got it all covered I'm sure, but I am trying to do that. Second, This is what works right now for my family and certainly may not for your family, but I arranged my schedule by reading many sources and you probably will too.

Now for the schedule, oopps, sorry I haven't one! Well, I mean we don't start at a certain time. I have a weekly schedule for what I want to accomplish. I have a spreadsheet that my dad help me make (because I am MS Office illiterate) that has the subject, lessons, appoximate time needed, and how many days it should take. After the week is over I go back and place a D for done in the spots. If we didn't get to something (like history) I will know that I need to catch that up at a later time (unit study for us). The big thing with this set up is that tis is not my record keeping, well it suppliments my record keeping, but it is for my dds (darling daughters). I have one for each girl. She knows what she needs to do for the week and she is allowed to do it in the order she chooses. So if she chooses to do 3 days of math at one time, she is credited for the days in math. Ok a better explaination is ... when she gets all the lessons done, no matter the order she does them in, she gets 5 days of school credit. Since there are some guidelines to what is to be done and for how long, this helps me make sure all is well with school! This also gives the girls freedom to do the yucky stuff (handwriting) first or save the hard stuff for last. I think it is along the workboxes vein but a little more freedom. Here is an example...

Now the main reason for my giving so much freedom, is do to learning/personality styles. My oldest, who actually has the freedom, is a mama hen (literally but that is another post), she likes to be in charge. I am so often trying to cull this in her, so that she may see the rewards of obedience, that I thought I would let her have an area in which she really is in control ... or at least thinks she is. I do guide on a daily basis. My youngest dd is very much in need of my attention so we do school together, usually her in my lap, so that we can be close and snuggle. She doesn't use the "do it when you want" thing quite as much, but she thinks she does. :)

Now as for me, this is what I REALLY use. I have to accomplish 180 days with each child for a school year. So I made (again with my dad's help) my idea of a lesson planner. It is a spread sheet with 1-180 and a listing for each subject. I used this only last year. I would simply write in the days we had school, and what we did. Simple, simple and no pressure to get anything done. Now the draw back was no pressure to get things done... Now this year I keep up with the days on this planner. I will fill in 5 days after they are done with the week, but it also leaves me room to add in those field trip days, and co-ops that are not part of the five days of work. That means if they get their week's worth of work done in 4 days and we have co-op that week, they get 6 days worth of school days credit.

This also works greatly for unit study times. I can fill in what we have learned that day and be able to keep up with the days it takes to go through a certain unit. I had thought of just using the girls planners, but it just wasn't working for me so I went back to ole faithful...

So I hope you have learned a little and maybe thought of some fine tuning you could do... Have fun and happy homeschooling!

Homeschool Curriculum 2009-2010

Well, we are off on our home school journey for yet another year. Smiley in 2nd grade, Jmama in K, and Boy in the way! The newness of crisp books and clean paper is enough to make the school year a delightful beacon. Well the start of it anyway.
This is about our choices for this year and how they are working, or maybe not...
Math: I have a 2nd grader that is great at math, like her momma, she just gets it. That is such a blessing. We are using Miquon Math Red book. I love it for her. She looks at the paper and 80% of the time she already knows what to do. Sometimes I have to slow her down and teach her how to use the tools in the book, like number lines. She is great at it with out the new stuff, but it may be helpful later. Miquon math +++ for Smiley.
Language Arts: This same 2nd grader is also going through "First Language Lessons". Again, great for her she gets what I am presenting to her and it is so helpful that FLL is so scripted! Woo Hoo! She is learning nouns, poems, thinking through a picture and the actions on it. Fun stuff. FLL +++ for Smiley. She is also doing some reading comprehension from an old book that I was given. The wording is kinds tricky, so she is not flying through it but with a little thought guidance, she usually figures it out. (if not she is in a ball of tears... perfectionist) I plan on moving to this at Currclick when we are done. She likes the story, that is why I am sticking with this one for now. She has 10 minutes of free reading/listening 3 times a week that we overfill with books on cd and her reading to her little brother before bed. And the 3 shouts and a trumpet go to our spelling program: Sequential Spelling! I love it. You don't study words to forgot them tomorrow, you just repeat them and then they stick! Love it, did I say that? She is spelling words she has never seen, and often right the first time. Sequential Spelling +++ and a horn, woot woot!
Handwriting and Scripture memory: These are together because we use "A Reason for Handwriting". This is Scripture based, you have 3 days of word copy, one day of verse copy and finally you copy the verse inside a "frame" and give it away, or just to have record of handwriting. Since we are already practicing our handwriting with Scripture, I figured this is a great verse to memorize, so that is what we do. I think the fact that she is writing words from the verse helps her to remember it. "A Reason for Handwriting"+++.
Now for my Kindergartner we have a very loose plan, she is in K after all!
Math: We are again using Miquon Math but Orange. I am not sure we will stay here with her yet, I just can't decide if she is struggling with the way it is presented in Miquon, or if she just struggles with Math in general. I will have to get back to you on that one. Miquon for K, +.
Language Arts: We are just focusing on reading right now and using "Ordinary Parents Guide to teaching Reading" This is just her speed so it is going well. We skipped the memory in the beginning because she had already learned her sounds through Abeka last year. She was having a harder time trying to remember the new poem than learn the sound so I just moved on to the reading part. Glad I did, she is doing great and loves that she is learning to read. Bob books will be presented soon.
She is not doing memory verses yet, I just don't want to overwhelm her. That will be later and most likely the same that sister is learning.
Now the girls have a few things they both do:
Typing: Yes I have started both kids typing. They are on the computer and I don't want them to get into bad habits. So Smiley is just using a free program I have found and she likes it. I found lots of cd programs online but most have content I was not comfortable with. I may try an adult program next year but for now, this is great. Jmama is using Talking Fingers and she really likes it. It is reinforcing her reading skills, which I love.
History: we will be using Mystery of History. We started it last year and it was just over all heads, so we will do it this year. It has visual/hands-on stuff that I like.
Science: Stratton House kits. I think it is going to be great. I wanted some fun stuff to add to all the paperwork type things so this is it. right now it is the bird study. This time of year makes it very interesting. Currently, we are trying to identify some birds. We fill out an identification worksheet on them, try to get a picture, then look the bird up and see what it is. This has made our interest in birds even greater.
We will be doing "My body" after the birds... can't wait for that one!
Hebrew: We have chosen Hebrew as a second language. There are many reasons, but I will save those. My mom is the one in charge of Hebrew. She has been learning Hebrew for a few years now and I suggested she teach the kids so as to keep it fresh and use it! Rosetta Stone is the way to go for foreign language, especially if you choose an odd language. :)

I am going to post our scheduling of school days soon, so check back!

Letterboxing

We just finished our first "treasure hunt" otherwise known as letterboxing. I found out about it and just started digging deeper into it. I have always wanted to go geocaching so when I heard about this I was instantly curious. It requires nothing much more than a compass and time. We were able to find our first box without a compass, just simple clues.
I am not a "Hey lets take a walk and see what we see" kind of mom. I kinda have to have a goal and destination. Well this is the way for me to get out, hike, walk and school my kids along the way. On this particular hunt we went to a local nature trail. The clues were very simple... follow this trail, look for a fork in the road go east, pass two Braille signs and look toward 300 degrees and in the middle of the tree you will find it! And we did! As we looked we talked about a fork in the road, and about the reasons for Braille signs. We found several tiny frogs and saw turtles and fish. We talked about leaves of 3, let them be. We also saw some cool trees and flowers. All while hunting for a plastic box. When we got to the box we were not really sure what to do as it was our first. We just looked at it funny.
Then I got to explain... We opened the box and found a stamp and a book. The stamp was of a hand and a tree, the clue was in the "palm" of the tree. Perfect sense. We took scrapbook paper for this one so we each stamped our paper and we kept that. Next we looked at the book. This book started in 2006. In it was stamps from a Girl scout troupe and folks from all over, very cool! Now it was our turn to say "we were here". Each girl had a stamp they had gotten out of their crafts, and stamped a page in the book. On it they wrote their names and the date. Just another in a long list but very neat to see where they all came from. We did put that on there also.
One of the unusual things about box we found is that it had been there for 5+ years! How fun is that. I bet I have walked past letterboxes and never knew they were there! They are all over the city and parks, and there are LOTS all over the country.
We had a great time, even the boy enjoyed exploring nature. He told me the places he needed his hammer and when he was working.
Overall, I will put this on our list of things to do on vacation from now on! I had a ball, and the next day we introduce Daddy to the hunt. He had as much fun as we had the evening before. It was a good thing he was there, I didn't understand the clues as well this time but he did. I guess that's the fun of it, sometimes you find it, sometimes you don't!
I hope you get a chance to look up some places close to you and enjoy the game! Here are some sites for ya! http://www.atlasquest.com/ and LbNA

Music That Encourages Me

In Christ Alone must be one of my favorite songs, if not THE favorite. It awakens my senses to worship. It quickens my pulse, the Lifeblood in me, given to me. I hang on every word as if it were resonating on my own vocal cords. I think I can smell the aroma of prayer just from the Spirit inside me speaking to the Father. Oh, it does far more than just encourage me.
In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My comforter, my all in all
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
Here in the love of Christ... so very simple, moves my core to worship, to a different place in my mind. I feel like worshipping in every fiber of my being, where I long for that different place, that next life, one of complete outward focus.Where I will no longer be busy with earthly needs and tasks. Where the things I call mine right now are but specks of dust in an afternoon sunbeam. Where my song is in unison with a multitude, a continuous crescendo of voices, singing, crying adoration to the King.
In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless Babe
This gift if love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
'Til on the cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For ev'ry sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ... I live
Here in the death of Christ, I live... reminds me of the Life given to me through the murderous torture and crucifixion of my Beloved. The Man whose skin was clawed and stripped by the sharpened instruments of my sin. The One who carried my wondering past engraved on a tree through a wondering path of mockers and scorners. The King whose crown I wove with deceitful lips and sharp lying words.
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then, bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost it's grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ
This is where I want to move, somewhere, anywhere, just get up! To be closer to Him, freer to feel Him, able to worship Him. It's like a rumble in me that I don't want to contain, I want to release it, but it is not meant to be released. It is meant to be shared, it cannot be released for I haven't the ability to hold it. I am the one being held. It is the joy of my Beloved's grasp on me, His ever enduring fingers from which I cannot be pried.
No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No pow'r of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
'Til He returns or calls me home
Here in the pow'r of Christ I'll stand.
Here is where I feel as if all of me is speaking with Him. I am reminded of my freedom and my imprisonment. My freedom from the ties of sin that kill. My imprisonment to the Source of my freedom, that which I freely and wholeheartedly seek, desire, want, need, long for. I love the loose bound chains that keep me near to Him. He does and has commanded my destiny. Not that he dictates, or makes me do anything. He, as Merriam-Webster defines "commands", has always and always will "exercise a dominating influence over" every person. We are constantly influenced by His craftsmanship, creation, orchestration of the earth and heavenlies. Many, many are influenced by peer pressure, though not all are swayed by Divine pressure. Few are those who hear His voice in a meadowlark or see His love in the protective manner of a lioness with cubs. Few are those who feel His arms in difficulty or praise His name in the mundane and the exciting alike. But those of us who do, we enjoy walking through life as if in a picture. A hand painted personal work of art. Made with the caressing strokes of a lover on the canvas of our soul.

Meat-za Pie

Hello all,
I am trying out a new blog thingy... MckLinky blog hop. It has a theme and comes out on Tuesday so I will be submitting my own blog and see how it goes. Maybe it will get me blogging a little more. This week's theme is favorite recipe. I hope you enjoy it!

Meat-za Pie

1 lb ground beef (well I use turkey)
1 cup Italian bread crumbs
1 tsp garlic powder
1 sm can evaporated milk (5 oz)
1 sm can sliced mushrooms
ketchup
1 cup shredded cheese

Preheat oven to 350. Combine the first four ingredients in a bowl with a fork. Sometimes I add an egg, not sure why I do but it changes the consistency a bit. Place mixture in a pie dish and flatten with fork. Coat top of mixture with ketchup spread out with the back of a spoon. (This can be as desired, think of the tomato sauce on a pizza.) Next top with sliced mushrooms and cover with cheese. Place in oven 25 minutes or until top is golden brown. Let sit for 3-5 minutes before serving. Cut into "slices" and enjoy!

I have had this dish since I was a little girl with a few modern twists added. Now this is a favorite dish at our house with often very little left overs. I like to serve it with green beans and corn.

If you try it let me know how you like it!

Girl-a-rama at the Spohrs and a scare!

I have some very good friends that have had a bad case of "what next?". So I decided to host 2 of their 3 kids for a slumber party. Two girls the same ages as ours! We had a great time.
It all started with the usual fair of mud pies and playing in the playhouse. The little girls that came over are the same ones that taught my kids the "joy" of mud pies. I guess it was a good thing but I hate dirt so it has been a struggle for me. I have however, slowly given in to the fact that it is a time consuming activity and with the boy, it's just gonna happen.
Soon, it was time for dinner. We had hot dogs, Cheetos, grapes, mac n cheese, and edmames. A lot of junk and a few treats. After dinner, it was off to the sprinkler for a little wet time.
Then the sun finally went behind the mountain so we played, umm attempted to play, kickball. There are a few things that you just don't learn by being a homeschooler, one is playground games. A few weeks ago, we were at the same girls house and there was a game of tug of war, no one knew how to slap hands and say good game. Now back to our house and no one knows how to kick the ball and run the bases. And with 4 little girls there is not really enough for teams so we just played kick and run. After the learning curve, the girls had worn off a little energy. For more energy release, they chased John, then each other.
As the sun started going down, we started on smoke bombs. Girls, of course, liked the color aspect and off they ran to mix the colors. Now John was setting up the few fireworks we had gotten, and blowing up a few. The girls waited on dark with ice cream.
Now here is where the scare starts to creep in. I put the dog inside at first but when you are going in and out, I guess I just let him go out like usual. During the fireworks I saw the little thing trying to get in the front door. I guess it didn't register that he may run off. I guess I just thought he would stay on the front porch. Nope.
We watch a few more fireworks and take a break to wait on John's parents to arrive before we finish the show. Now here is where I realize that I no longer see the little rat dog. I casually call him, every few minutes, then as the time wains, a little more frantically. No little rat dog. John's folks show up, mine have come over, and everyone is calling for the little dog. The fireworks are nixed, 2 girls move indoors to watch movies and the other 2 go with John and his parents to call for the dog.
Fast forward to 10:30-ish, little girls get a snack, and 2 try to see where Momma/ Mrs Brandee's line is and they cross it. Now mind you I am trying to maintain composure even though my dog is missing and the littles want to stretch the snack. I loose it and snap "The dog is missing and I really need you girls to obey and get to bed!" By the end of that sentence a had started crying. I didn't want to break the mood of the slumber party by showing my sadness but they should have been in bed by now and I just really needed to cry!
Finally the girls are in bed and I can't sleep. I pass the time by making a "lost dog" sign and playing countless games of solitaire. I soon feel my body wear out and go to bed at 1am. At 2 am, one of the girls is constantly coughing so I am up trying to decipher who, what, why, water... back to bed. At 3 am I am waken again, only this time it is by the familiar bark of the little rat dog. I stumble to the door, call for him and in he comes. Of course, like nothing was wrong and he had not been gone for hours. A bite to eat and he is ready for bed, as am I. Whew, rest....
Next day....Oblivious to the missing dog, the girls are slowly waking, I hear chatter from the room and giggles. So cute! John goes in to announce that the dog is home. They had forgotten but their happy. Then JMama pipes up "because we prayed". Yes JMama, because we prayed... During the night of looking, we stopped with John's folks and prayed for the dog's safety and return. Good thinking JMama.
We decide on cinnamon rolls for breakfast...I hear "I don't like cinnamon rolls..." What!?! Are you sure? *Thinking....Are you ok kid?* Have you ever tried cinnamon rolls? "No" Sssoooo....After a taste test, the rolls were happily approved and gobbled up. Hey Mom, open the can and bake a cinnamon roll every once in a while! You can't live on raspberries alone!
We had a great time with littles! The kid less parents went to "The Melting Pot". Said they had an adventure... I can't wait for the slumber party at their house! AAAhhhhh, Dreaming of adult conversation and face to face time with my man!

Grab a bag yourself

I found this delightful crafty, fabric-y, learning place. Since I love fabric and all the notions and tools that go with fabrics I thought I would pass this on to you also. C&T Publishing They are having a grab bag contest... there are 16 grab bags to be given a way! It can't hurt and you just might win something! You can't win if you don't enter!
Let the Son shine,
Brandee

Boy’s new bed.

Last weekend life began to change here in the Spohr home. I put boy to bed for a nap and took the opportunity to nap myself. After about an hour of sounds of playing coming from the boy's room, John decided he was just going to tell him that he needed to go to sleep. John opened the door to find the boy looking at him… about face to face. Boy is on top of the changing table, beside the door. He has pulled out most of the wipes and stuffed them behind the changing table with a nice wad on the floor. He has knocked most of the table's contents to the floor and is now smiling at his daddy.

I knew it was coming, each girl could have stayed in the crib until their feet were hanging through the rungs and never thought of escape, not boy. It is the conquer and fix mentality of a male. I have seen it in him many times in these 2 years, although it is way more obvious of late. Even tonight as John pulled down the pieces to the toddler bed, boy was trying to put them together. Not once did either of us say anything to make him think that it was to be assembled. He just knew… and he tried.

He is now sleeping quietly in his new bed. Probably dreaming of trucks and cars driving along the edges, puppies and toys, and what his slight freedom will provide him. I, on the other hand am slightly saddened… tomorrow my boy will not need "ma" to get him out of bed…

The Guest Unseen

This was our new friend a few days ago. John went out one morning to go to work. As he walked in the garage, this guy was walking out. John said "I let him sleep in the garage, and now he wants to fight". The thing is huge. He looked like a mini lobster. About 25 more of them and we would have had a crawfish boil! Here's a video or two...

Happy Mother's Day!

Today I want to celebrate my mom.

Thank you, Mom for all that you do and most especially all the you have done. You have always been a great mom. You have protected me me from many things. You have allowed me to learn from my own mistakes. You have prayed diligently for me. I am so thankful for all of it.

I know my childhood wasn't easy for you. I know I was not the easiest child I look at my own children and see your dilemma. I thank you for loving me anyway.

I thank you for being there for me. For praying for me and being there when I asked to go to church with you. Thank you for stating the Truth without serving judgment. I know it made the Truth easier to accept. Thank you for all the prayer, I know it works! I am a result of it. Thank you for teaching the kids Hebrew. Thank you for those few hours of rest I get when the girls are playing at your house. Thank you for keeping them all when I have appointments. You are such a big help.

Thank you again for all you do... I love you, ~Brandee

Smiley's point of view...

When you give a little girl a camera, sometimes you get this...

And sometimes you get this...

Lunch with Daddy

This is a few picks from Adtran. We had lunch with Daddy. I thought the geese on their nests was neat. They are all over. The little duck family was so cute. I tried to explain to the kids that those children stay close to their mommy. They said they were just babies that's why. And I thought it was an object lesson.

Square Foot Gardening

I decided to give square foot gardening a shot this year. I hope it keep the whole thing managable. I get over-whelmed with a big garden and let it go. Hopefully this will keep me from that. I planted lots of flowers, coreander, dill, lavender, corn, carrots, green beans, edemames, okra, watermelon, cantalope, tomatoes, wow, a lot! Notice the last picture, that's my gardener. He will be all over the garden. I can tell. I think in this picture he is playing with garden sheers I left... *note to self* keep all tools under tight supervision. Planted April 30. We'll see how it goes....

For me, heaven...

Or at least a taste of it...
My husband is in the bed taking a nap with a precious boy beside him, chicks are in a makeshift pen enjoying the sun and grass, daughters are planting plants and digging for worms for the chicks. It's a gorgeous Saturday afternoon.
Thank you, Lord.
You have given me many gifts despite my many faults.
God made it for us to enjoy...Times like these...

He's Alive!

My husband let me hear this song for the first time about 10 years ago. I know I cried then and, just now, as I listened anew, I am once again in tears thinking of this past Sunday. If you can, plug in the earbuds and enjoy!

Good Night Easter...

While I am on a rant of quick posts... Here is what I found after a semi scared Jmama came out of her room with an odd lip and chin. What's that? John and I are thinking.

Daddy investigates: Jmama come here sweetheart.... to get a closer look....???? Still puzzled, he pulls her close for a whiff.... Jmama, do you know where the chocolate bunny is?

Jmama: Uuummmm... *smile*

Daddy: *bursts into laughter*

Momma: *stern faced, I had to turn my head, to laugh* Jmama, where is the bunny?

Jmama: *smile*

I looked beside the bed and found the picture above, a faceless chocolate bunny and a peep missing an ear and a leg....
I was too late to get the picture of her face but she had no clue how covered in chocolate she was. Let's just say she looked like she had grown a 5 oclock shadow. Notice the bunny has not been removed from the box.... Nor have the peeps... Because we wouldn't know if it's still in the box, Right?

Good Morning Ma!

I just could not wait for this....
This is the Good Morning Ma! I got this morning. Yes, that is his diaper. Oh yes again, that is his jammies. He has escaped for the first time. And just a few minutes before I found him, I was thinking of putting him in a toddler bed... Umm, I don't think so! You can't see but there is a big smile behind that arm. I think he was proud of his sly moves. Silly Boy!

More Adventures in Chickens...

So here we go again, we got 28 chicks on March 23. Who knew you could have 28 chicks in that little box! We got a call at 5:45am, I couldn't wake the kids for that early, so we waited a while. They are so cute when they are so tiny. 6 will be going to a friend but the others are ours. We have 2 more roosters, but the rest are hens. Each girl got 2 of their own. Smiley got a white rock and black australorp. Jmama got 2 buff rocks. Jmama says they are sisters. John got a red star and a partridge rock. I got 13 barred rocks. I am so excited! We also have the 2 blk aust roosters because they are supposed to be gentle and laid back. Very unlike the rooster we have right now.
So come July or Aug we will have eggs galore! I am going to sell them. I just feel like it's the right thing to do. I need to help my husband in the finance dept. and the Bible is clear that a woman can be in business. I just think it should not be at the top of the responsibility list, that place is saved for family: God, husband, children, extended family... in that order!

Sorry back to chickens *kicking the soapbox*, Now on to week 2..it is amazing how fast they grow. Got a little tail feather growth, and more wing feathers.... Here are the sister chicks, one of Smiley's and one of Jmama's. More to come...

Look out NRA...

The oldest gal has gotten her first gun safety and shooting lesson. We at the Spohr home think a gun is ALWAYS a weapon and never a toy. We don't have play guns, and water guns are water shooters. So after a few weeks of practice in the responcibility department, she has been upgraded to "Able to shoot a gun" with her other resposibilities.
This is a Crickit, a small single shot .22 rifle. I am very pleased at the size of it. It is a little big for her but we agree that a bit oversized makes it more to respectable. My first experience with a gun was like that, although I am pretty sure it was a much heavier gun or a shotgun, I don't remember. I just know I understood the power of a gun after that.
She did great for her first shot, it was about 5" away from the center at about 10 oclock. The next was about 6" low at 6 oclock.
Maybe she will have an interest in competative shooting, maybe not, but she will hopefully have a healthy respect for a gun.

My new workout

It's a workout because my tummy is hurting after watching...

Thanks Godtube.com!

Who knew?

Here at the Spohr house we love "hand me down", recycled, almost new, rehomed, gently worn... clothes.
Case in point: this past week Nana brought over a little bag with a few clothes from my sister-i-l. They are always a big hit because the older cousins wore them and well we think they are so cool. This little bag of clothes held treasure never before seen. Treasure the likes of which had not even been thought of... HOUSECOATS! I know you are thinking... "WOW, housecoats now that is treasure! Where can I get one of those? Where is mine? How blessed you are!" And many other fantastic jubilatious thoughts such as these. If you are 6 and 4 these are your thoughts! The girls acquired their new found treasures and immediately put them to use. Never mind that they were already dressed for the day. Since they were such great treasures of lands far away. They were donned everyday since... even during the heat wave of the past days.
Thank you so much Aunt Dana!

My thoughts of Facebook

Facebook: the social network. Who needs that I am NOT social, at all! I am the girl that shows up to functions, stays close to my hubby and well, talks to him. I can be social if I feel I need to be... but this is not the track I wanted to be on, the track I wanted to be on was my current thoughts on Facebook, not my social life, or are they intertwined?

I had heard of My Space and Facebook for a while and really had no desire to become part of the community. I felt it was for folks that had lots of friends, liked to hang out, and/or single.
How wrong I was...
First I started the thing to get in touch with the Murphy's, John's high school buddy and his wife. Then I just dropped it and didn't do anything with it for several months. Along comes a friend of mine from church and is telling me how many of our friends are on there, how she is reconnecting with friends from high school, and other things I found foreign. So this time I actually get on FB and look around, search for a few peeps I knew from other places, and play a few games. It was fun starting off with my friends at church, see how they were doing. Since I had started going to church on Sun nights, I was missing the things happening with the folks who stayed on mornings. Then, I found some ladies in my home school group, then a gal from one of my workplaces.
So anyway, this past couple of weeks have been the major increase in my "friends". First, lots of folks from high school are catching on to FB and it has become a little network in itself. Then I got a friend request from a girl I knew in NC. I had looked her up when I started, but she wasn't there. Then I guess she just got started and looked for me. She had a friend that I knew, this other person has a high school friend that is one of my current friends, another friend is cousins with a friend in my morning Sunday school class ..... and so on.
I guess what I am getting at is this: the Internet is not evil and even social can be good. I have prayed for friends, some knew, others won't ever. Where else would I have the opportunity to casually see into peoples lives and make a difference? Every status posted is there for a purpose, every person chooses what they want to put out there for others to read. For instance, one person is having a hard time with the recent death of her mom. She makes comments about her sad days, posts pictures of memories, and you can just sense that she is still mourning that loss. I get to pray for her, carry her burdens to the Father, and all without her even knowing. It's just between me and the One who can carry her pain. Please don't think this is about me. It is just about the opportunities God gives us. It would be easy for me to snub the social scene and say it's just not for me, what is not so easy is to step out and let others see me. The me that God has changed, made new by his grace, the me that many don't even know. I am far from the girl I use to be, so far that I normally choose to hide from those who knew me when... But on FB I can be me, at a distance. I don't have to be tangled in their lives, just seeing what they desire others to see. And I don't have to worry if they are picturing the old me or not, they will eventually see the new me. I want them all to know the reason I am a new me. I want them to know how Jesus picked me from my miry pit and set my feet upon the Rock. I want then to know how I was sad, lonely, lost and unable, then I asked for help from the only One who could give it. Now I am joyful, content, have a hope and able.

Gardens: school and food

I started a garden unit study today. I have no idea what I am doing but I am going to try. This will be our first real unit study, other than the month of December when we studied the birth of Christ. I am hoping it will help the girls learn but as of right now, it is the same ole' struggle. I am trying to change things up, so maybe I can get them excited to learn! I did get some encouragement this weekend, some of my homeschool friends reminded me that the goal is to instill a desire for learning, however that may be. If it is on the computer, in the yard, or with a pencil, it's just about learning. I envisioned desks and neatly kept workplaces, order and politeness, schedules and structure. What I am now seeing is kitchen tables and picnic tables, laptops and workbooks, adventure and investigation, and trying to see the world through their eyes. I so want to be the best teacher but some days it is nearly impossible. I want them to obey and I want them to learn, sometimes I feel I have to choose, but hopefully I will direct them in ways that make them want to learn then they will obey because it's easy to obey when it's something you want to do. I don't think I will ever have the homeschool thing down, but I am trying.
And while I am talking homeschool...Why is it so hard to get my children to pick up a pencil for goodness sake? If they only used the computer to learn, they would be fine. The problem comes in when I want them to do a little bit of copy work. I really want them to learn cursive so R is doing just that, she has gotten so much better since the start of the year. J on the other hand, I can't even get her to try any letters other than her name. You would think they grew up around all things convenient. How inconvenient to have to use a pencil and paper for goodness sake! Whew, I feel better, thanks for letting me vent....

How may Wii help you?

I know you have heard enough about the silly Wii game but it has been a strange happening at our home. No more TV at night, we wii. Last night all my favorite see what the world really is shows came on, well not all, but 3 full hours of them. Well you know, I missed them, of course being the industrious girl I am (NOT!) I recorded them on our handy dandy DVR. Not the TIVO stuff, this one's generic so we don't have to have cable. But handy none the less. Instead of watching mindless television, I played wiith my kids and worked out wii style.
I am really digging the wii workout. Today I hula hooped for 6 minutes. Let's just say, my tummy is screaming, "Sit down you fat girl that's what we do!" But no I have rebelled! I am a wii fit girl under here and I am on the hunt to find her! I am not alone in my wii fit efforts, John can be found for quite some time on the thing, usually playing tennis or boxing. The girls have made a habit of running, yes running, (maybe it will stick). It is the funniest thing... See...

John has also tried is hips at hula hoop.....

Call the police, Momma's speeding!

At least I feel like it because we now have a new laptop! Yeah, go us! After only hand-me-down technology, we have finally reached a place to purchase our own! Now that I am casually doing a post at the kitchen table, able to hang with the family and let you in our lives so easily, I now know why it was so hard to blog before. By now I would have been in the laundry room for and hour, and now I have just been at the table for like 5! Isn't life smoother? I think so.

We have also purchased a Wii. This friends has been the center of our home for two days, kids included. I have watched the girls run for an hour or so side by side, getting along, and exercising! This is too much fun. They each have their own Wii strengths and they run in place so cute! John and I both have logged at least 30 minutes workouts each day. I will say whoever came up with this Wii fit idea was a genius, and must have read my mind. They have done a great job of sticking the carrot in my face. I am an achiever, I like to go to the next level, and now I have to exercise to get there! How cool is that. OK for those of you who already have Wiis, my apologies but I am so pumped by it. I am having fun working out and my kids are enjoying watching me and doing it themselves. I have pushed my calves into submission and taught my back and tummy a thing or two. I have now punched imaginary bags in front of my TV, and worked on my rhythm all at the same time. So fun! My Mom and Dad even came over and bowled with us! Now Ron, time for you and Michelle to come over and bowl, or golf with us! We will have a blast!
Whew, I have just posted a blog in about 30 minutes, so if you see the police heading my way, you will know why. Blazing fast words, and a fist fight in the living room, sounds like a redneck brawl! Well, you know me....

What a weird January...

I have been hacking and coughing all this month. As of today I am finally breathing... PTL. I guess all this rain and the pond beside the pond has stirred up the mold. Now I'm getting a cold. Oh, bother. I also have spend much of this month concerned about my eye health. I have an Optic Nerve Head Drusen, basically a piece of calcified dirt in my optic nerve. It is causing some loss of field vision and the Dr. wanted to make sure that the dirt was the root of the problem and not something else. Well all is well.... I do have to monitor my eyes each year but that's all. During all this I have ended up with reading glasses. This is my 3rd pair of glasses through my life. I think I just look at the computer to long and need some help for a while. Maybe after 37 years, my eyes may be going down hill....
We have also made our first trip to the ER with Boy. A few days ago, I was getting ready for an appointment and I could hear Boy coughing in the other room. He is always coughing because he has stuff in his mouth all the time. But this time it would not stop, so I go get him. He is still hacking and gagging while I turned him over to see if the problem would show itself. Not this time. Jmama was the only girl home and she didn't know what it was so I called the Dr. He said to go get an Xray it see if it was anything... so to the ER we go. After 3 hours, no lunch and nothing on the Xray, we left. If it was anything, we haven't seen it...
I think I'm a Facebook junkie...and boring. I was tagged to post 25 random things about me, it took over a week and at least 4 savings of my draft before I finally came up with 25. Here they are

1. I have 5 names, Brandee Carol Daly Ragan Spohr.
2. I was adopted. My stepdad adopted me so that's why 5 names.

8. I can tell my husband anything! I really mean ANYTHING.
9. I want a Great Dane but it would be like having Clifford with my little house.
10. I don't have cable or satellite. I am one of those effected by the "big switch"

19. I have a terrible memory, my paranoia says people think I'm a snob. I'm not, I just can't remember all that you can and I'm afraid you remember the little I do.
20. My boy is all boy, he headbutts, "drives" any thing with wheels, vacuum included, he turns on the tv them comes and sits in John's or my lap, I have heard "he is just a boy" when I notice an unruly little boy but I didn't believe it....until now.
21. Jmama reminds me of my grandmother, she has her OCD, and her stubborness. All qualities that crate on me, probably because I have them too.
