Pillar of Preservative

I have had Lot's wife in my head for weeks now. I just can't stop thinking about her. I find myself writing this blog post in my mind over and over in my daydreams (which usually occur only in the shower or after I should be in bed). I find myself fearful of being Lot's wife.

I think about the city they lived in and the rampant sin all around. How she had to make a life in it, do the best she could. I picture her being the good helpmeet, keeping the house and home in order, when just outside her door is a vicious animal of sin ready to devour her and her family. I think... I am doing the same thing, just trying to be the best wife and mom I know how.

Then I think about the mandate to leave. Now, just go, and don't look back. NOW, DO NOT LOOK BACK. What do you think she said...

Um, really, God said go now? ... Lot, are you sure he said now?... Lot, I am in the middle of dinner and the clothes need hung to dry, give me just a minute... Really Lot, we have all our things here, grab the family menorah, oh and don't forget the oil, we will need that... Maybe she just hesitated and looked at her life in the walls of her home. Wouldn't you do that... take one last look on the way out the door.

Maybe she was the dutiful wife. Maybe she walked right out the door with Lot and never hesitated. Maybe she just wanted to remember her home there. To look at the surrounding one last time. If I could know that a tornado was coming to my house but I could get in the car and drive away before it happened, you bet I would be looking out the window. I would be looking to see if it really was close to my house. I would be guessing the place where it was landing. I would be glued to the window, I know I would. So was that her reason for turning around?

She turns around and poof, she if a pillar of salt. Have you ever thought about her turning into salt? Scripture repeatedly uses salt as a good thing and here it is a sandy death, or is it. I wonder if her changing into salt was seen as a preservative? Did they see her death as useful in some way? It fascinates me that God chose to make her a pillar of salt. So does that mean she was a Godly woman that made a deadly mistake. What if the salt was to remind us that a simple mistake can be used for the preservation of the righteous, yet the consequences on earth can be sudden and deadly.

How many times do we look back... All those what ifs and should haves. I bet I do it daily, so does that mean I am not living in God's will, am I not Godly enough, am I going be an example of what not to do, like Lot's wife?

Thankfully there is grace, undeserved favor. I use much more than my fair share, but God keeps dishing it out. Just because he loves. Me.

I pray I can be like Lot's wife... not the sandy death part and the big uh oh part, but the preservative part. I pray I am able to leave one Godly example here on earth that will be talked about longer than my years. I pray that even if it's all about what not to do, that others will learn from my mistakes.

Anything to be used by God.

Progressive Christmas Part 1 & 2

So we are having a progressive Christmas... One night we put up the tree and we read about evergreens and how they represent the eternalness of Christ. We also talked about the shape of a triangle and how that reminds us of the trinity. How it points up to heaven. How it's a tree cut off from it's place like Christ was cut off from heaven for a time. How it's been brought into a home to bring us a message, just like Christ was brought to earth to give us a message. And that was just about the tree it's self!

A few days later we put the lights on the tree and talked about the story of Martin Luther walking through the woods and seeing the stars through the trees wanted to recreate it on his own tree. It's nice to look at the light on the tree and think of the stars in the sky.

This has been so much fun, we haven't even gotten any further that that but, I can hear the kids talk about what we have learned and they enjoy the process too.
We have been a bit crafty as well, we made a candy train to countdown the days to Christmas. Reign has made a wreath out of origami paper, although it was blue and orange. (War Eagle!) Boy has been the "mailman" to the advent calendar. I found a great one but now I can't find where I got it so I can't share it with you (bummer). I will let you know if I can find it! I pray that when the season is over, we have made a great tradition and more than that... good memories!

Where to stick our faces?

So it's here, you know the season to send cards to friends, family and fellows (ok it's the only word I could come up with that fit the pattern)
Well I have been bouncing around sites to find the "perfect" card for this year. Oh and it must be a photo card. Why? Because the family needs pics of the kids and it is so much easier to make that part of the card.
Well I have scanned through a good 4 sites, and a quadrillion sample cards to fine THE card. I have now determined it will not happen, because I have too many I like! If I could get about 20 of 3 different designs I might be happy, might being the operative word.
One of the sites, and one that may give me 50 free cards for blogging about it, is Shutterfly Christmas cards. I have been through the cards and here are my top group to narrow down from...
The first I noticed was "Picture in Landscape".  This one is basically a picture only front and then you personalize the inside. I really like this one because we had GREAT family pics done by a friend. I want the pictures to speak for themselves, maybe even put in a frame later. I also have an "inside" I have already penned a few years ago that I would like to use. So that is why the plain one is in the line-up.
Number 2 in the Shutterfly Christmas Card line up is "Oh holy night", I love the black back ground and the reference to the Holy Night of Jesus Christ's birth.
Then there is "Three kings journey" it has a black back ground too. So, I think any second, I will find a setup that I like....
"Three wise men", and "Christ's Wishes" now those are getting closer to my tastes.
"Retro red diamond" is really nice and the fact that part of the proceeds go to the American Lung Association, now that hits close to home.
Now the winner of the Shutterfly Christmas Card "wish I could" is......(drum roll please)...

Can this really be any harder?

The "Rough Edge" because you can put several photos on it, more in it, and I will use my own greeting! Then again the "Classic Scarlet" may be a choice.... Oh no, now I have seen the Shutterfly calenders...will those be gifts????

Now if this is 150 words long I have completed the back bend to get free ones... The problem is I don't want to count all these words. So, I tried and I have picked out my Christmas Card for this year!

Progressive Christmas?

I have been thinking a lot about Christmas and how to let it all sink in. So after reading "The ADVENTure of Christmas" by Lisa Whelchel for several years now, I had a neat thought. What if we have a progressive Christmas Tree.
Here is my idea, first we will spend the day on a part of Christmas traditions, for example, the reason for an evergreen tree. We can study about how the evergreen reminds us that though Christ was murdered on a tree he continues to live. So that day we will get out the Christmas tree and set it up.
The next day, maybe we will study about why lights on the tree. We will learn about the true light and how someone saw the twinkling of moon light through the branches of trees at night. Then we will put the lights on the tree.
We will also do this with Christmas cookies, outdoor lights, and I have an idea for popcorn! (Maybe you will get that later)
So finally we will have a decorated home and Christmas tree by Christmas and then we can celebrate Jesus' Birthday with a bday party and scavenger hunt! We shall see......

Quirky, Spectrum, and my Grandmother

Do you ever get a chance to see your family member in your child's mannerisms? I have been blessed to say yes. My grandmother doted on my oldest daughter. She could not stand if I expected her to walk somewhere at 3. She made sure she was given whatever she wanted to eat. She didn't like her to be disciplined much. She would always try to change her focus with a silly sound when there was a chance she would cry. Such fond memories of a quite quirky lady. She would also carry any leftovers from a restaurant home with her. She collected coins. She would buy extra of something to stash away for a future gift. She would often sleep on the floor. She ALWAYS had a plethora of food in case someone was hungry. She loved to sit and watch people at the mall. She could also be generous and manipulative all at the same time. She is with Jesus now but I see her everyday in my youngest daughter. Oh how I loved her!
You see my youngest daughter is quite quirky as well. She collects coins, rocks, acorns and other tiny objects. She will bring home food from a restaurant to eat later. She has her own "style" of clothes, that it what ever is comfortable at the moment. She is manipulative at times. She is a sweet girl that loves to give kisses. She is also, as I am learning, on the spectrum.
Recently I had a talk with a friend of a friend about how my daughter thinks most clothes are uncomfortable. She said "That's real, clothes can hurt some kids". WHAT? Are you joking? That's crazy! Really? You mean she could really be hurting? She is not just trying to manipulate me? Whew, she is not out to get me. Oh no, what a terrible mom I am. In a matter of milliseconds, I went from "HA!" to humble. Really Lord could it be that she can't help it? Could she just be wired differently? Oh the horror of disciplining a child that did not willfully disobey.
And so... I have spent the last 2 months in observation mode mostly. Watching. Learning. Seeing. What makes her come to a halt? What makes her come unglued? What makes for an easy day? What makes a day difficult? When is she happiest? When is she easy?
Most of the answers, I did not like. Most of the time, it was ME! If I was procrastinating like I usually do, then trying to rush out the door...unglued. If I was a bit hormonal and resistant...a fit. If I was irritated...uncomfortable. Was I the problem? No. My reaction was the biggest problem. She was just herself. Do you see it? God made her the way she is and I was pushing her buttons and making that which irritated me most to come out.
She is quirky... or has spectrum issues. Depends on how you look at it. No wonder 1 in 110 are being diagnosed as Autistic. Some are just quirky too. Some are severe cases. But really the main idea with a spectrum child is the same...change your behavior to minimize the blowups, learn the best way to teach them what they need, and accept them, just as God made them. *Now I don't know if Autism is always natural, but I do know God is in control. He knows if they will be on the spectrum or not, and regardless He had a plan for my life by giving me this child.*
I can see so much of my grandmother's quirkiness in her. I like it. I hope I learn more and am able to help her move past these hurdles. I hope she will be someone else's quirky grandmother someday. For now, she is my gift from God. A gift I have yet to finish opening, but one I know will change me.

Down Syndrome and Adoption

Down Syndrome. Two words. Many with it. One common syndrome. Does it scare you? Does it make you sorry for those with it? Does it make you fear having children after 35? Does it make you want one?

I have had a deep love for children with Down Syndrome for as long as I can remember. I never wanted to "have" children. I always thought I would adopt many these special children. I was adopted by my step-dad so I am familiar with adoption. I thought it would be a "natural" way for me to have children. Fast-forward twenty some-odd years, I have 3 children and none are Down children and none are adopted.

After we started having children, I think I expected one of them to have DS, just because of my love for them. I have never had any tests during pregnancy for fear of having a Dr tell me that something was "wrong" with my child. They might think it odd if I was excited about having a child with DS. I almost pine for them when I see them. I always make a point to smile at them and their parents. I hope they can see my love in that smile.

Anyway, after reading a blog or two about adoption I was led to Reece's Rainbow site. Oh MY! I have a new favorite blog to visit! I am adding their "Child of the week" button on my blog. Expect to see many additions about these beauties. I dream of being able to take one of these precious gifts out of an orphanage or mental facility. If Father told me to, I would be on the road of adoption in a heartbeat.

How hard is it to want to do something that in essence is good, although you do not have permission from the Father? I mean who would say ~ "You should leave that child in that impoverished country." or "What are you thinking?" Sometimes God does. Sometimes, he wants us to take care of this or that and NOT take on the challenge of DS or adoption, because HE has a plan and this may not be part of it.

Do you have a dream that you cannot persue? Do you long for something that just never seems to be within reach? Now you know mine.... I will obediently wait for what Father has for my future. The trials and learning I will do with each of the precious gifts I already have. Should he choose me for the task of parenting a DS child... Bring it on! Here I am Lord, send me. If He does not choose to expand this family, I will love them (DS children) from afar... and enjoy every minute with my precious babies, because He knows best!

Dear body...

Dear ankle,
I know you have been abused and mistreated, but could you please do your job of keeping my leg ON TOP of my foot? I am really tired of you throwing me down at odd and random moments. I do not enjoy scrapping my knees, bruising my legs, and hurling against the concrete.
Forever yours,
Brandee 7-29-10

Dear rogue joint called ankle,
You and your weak ways have been changed. This marvel of fashion on my foot could poosibly be the end of your failing ways. I shall wear it knowing that you, dear ankle, may continue in these failing ways and this fashion gem shall hopefully keep me upright.
Confidently Standing,
Brandee 7-30-10

School is here?

So, school is not actually here, but just around the corner. Although we do school a bit all summer, we will officially plunge into a new routine and new books next week. So this week is dive in time. This week I take inventory, make a lesson plan for about a month, and get every thing ready.
My goals for this year are really simple: Capture the hearts of my children to obey, quickly and with a good attitude about it. I want to get Smiley confident with multiplication facts and enjoying reading. Jmama, well I just want to get her reading. What about Boy you ask? I just want him to learn his abc's and learn to play alone for a few minutes, while we have school.

Surgery was great!

You know I needed a facelift...well my blog did.

So I finally stayed up late to do a little surgery.

I am pleased with the results. What about you?

Facelift?

Facelift, anyone? Anyone?

me. Me. ME! Yes I need a facelift.

I need a facelift, but just the corners of my mouth kind. You know the kind that make you smile. Really, not a Joan Rivers perma-smile, just a -glad to be here- smile. Maybe a -hi there friend- smile.

Right now I am not wanting to smile. I am just too tired, too hormonal, too blah! I just spent the first half of 5 days with 200 first and second graders at my church's VBS. During that week my hubby worked 60+ hours and at one point he had logged 40 hours in the span of 48 hours (Do you know that we live 30 minutes from his work, one way...you do the math) My children are over stimulated and whiny from their VBS week. And I haven't had a *normal* menstrual cycle for YEARS... until this week.

I know it's TMI, too much information, but I really need to get past this blah, so I am announcing it to the 3 people who actually read this blog. I know you only read it because I send it to you, but work with me here.

No, no, no, this is just all wrong! I wrote the title to tell you that I am bored with they way my blog looks, but instead I got sidetracked into my own little "woe is me" moment. Sorry! My actual point in this post was... my BLOG needs a facelift.

Well, there you go, my personal pity party and my blog pity party. Just think you got 2 for one here!

Interesting new website and giveaways!

I have stummbled across this website Raising Homemakers. That is such a desire in me to train the girls to be better at this job than I am. To kick off their new site (with several contributors) they are having lots of giveaways!

This one for a 10 dvd set of Homestead Blessings is one of those I would really like. I would take them one at a time if someone wanted to gift them to me :)  Hurry and enter this giveaway will end on Friday, June 4th at 8pm EST.

They are also giving away a copy of the book I am currently reading Raising Maidens of Virtue by Stacy McDonald. I am loving it! It is more for a wee bit older girls than mine (right now) but I am being challenged at every step.

And the first giveaway they are having is Polished Cornerstones book and the Beautiful Girlhood collection. I hope to get the Polished Cornerstones book before they start the link up on June 30! I don't know what a link up is but I am very interested in the book. Maybe it will be something that helps me out! Hurry and enter this giveaway will end on Friday, June 4th at 8pm EST.

These three giveaways are all things I like or would like to have. It really makes me excited to what comes out of this site (I am pleased so far). So hop on over and look around. They should be posting more stuff and I can't wait!

God our Father

We just returned from vacation and I was able to snag this while we were there. As you can see I had to be prepared, he's a fast little thing. It is an amazing blessing to hear my children pray!

I have my reasons...

We have always had our own reasons for homeschooling. We think this, we think that, but I really didn't have a clear idea or reason from scripture. I was led to this blog post via facebook and I am really feeling informed today. We are told to be ready to give account as to the hope that is within us, well I am closer to being able to do that about homeschool as well. I pray that if you homeschool, you are more informed today and feel a sense of encouragement as I did. If you one of the scores of people who have your children in public school, I pray you too are informed and maybe even changed by this. Enjoy...

Barn Owl on nest

I really can't help but share this barn owl on her nest. I love these wildlife web cams and being able to admire the workmanship of my Creator!

Shh.. My Secret

My secret is that I love to sew and crochet. Crochet seems to be the current projects, but it's only because I don't have a home for my sewing machine right now. ***Dreaming*** Anyway, here is a new "channel" I have been introduced to and guess what? They are giving away a sewing machine and embroidery machine.... ***Dreaming again***. So check out the new page and videos and enter for this yummy stuff!

From my hubby....

(Somehow this never got posted. What a shame. Today is July 3, 2012 this was January 29, 2010 and Boy was 2 1/2 yo, he just turned 5 a few weeks ago *sigh*)

Sometimes little boys can melt their daddy's hearts.....

……even better than a little girl can.

Last night, I needed to go look at an electrical project for a guy at work, and decided to go home and get Boy first, and have some special time, just he and I.  We were driving down the road talking about "higherhighdrance" (fire hydrants), trucks, radio towers, and many more things that I'm not even sure what they were.  The conversation got quiet, so I said "Boy, what do you want to be when you grow up".  I was expecting 'Bob the Builder' or 'Thomas the train' or 'a fireman' – something along those lines, but instead, he looked straight at me, took his thumb out of his mouth and simply said "like you, Dad" (thumb goes back in).  Tears welled up in my eyes, and I said "Oh thank you son, but I hope you grow up to be a much better man than Daddy."  He took his thumb back out and said "Me love you, though."  I realized last night that Boy understands much more than I, or anyone else probably gives him credit for.

A beautiful, loving wife, 2 beautiful, precious girls, and a little man who has a tender heart, yet is a 'man's little man', and they all know Jesus loves them – I'm living my biggest dream.

*And I am a very bless woman ~Brandee*

I blew it!

So, you are waiting for the words of encouragement and Truth to oose from this post and touch a part that is needing to be touched? Me too. I really can't remember all that we talked about this week. I have gotten a good and much needed reprimand from Father this week and well that is where I am. When you are leading a class like this, your faults and selfishness come screaming out of the woodwork and stand face to face with you as you try to walk the same paths you have walked before. Let's look at my week:

Wednesday: Go to class and talk about thankfulness, gratitude, joy, and being, doing those things for our husband.

Thursday: I receive an email in my inbox that says "I have a surprise for you, Fed Ex tomorrow" Here is where I start the slipping and I didn't even realize it at the time, but my response was "is this for everyone or just for me?" The reason I chose this sentence is because I am selfish and my Darling Husband is not great with "surprises" as a matter of fact, he can't surprise me. I have to give him a list of things I would like for birthdays, Christmas, etc. He just doesn't have it in him to make mental notes. This is NOT bashing, it is plain truth. Ask him... I thought the next response was good, "Thank you , I love you" And I truly thought at the time that I was doing good and lifting my husband. Now I know it was the beginning of the evil one's attack on me and him.

Friday: I get home from the being out and see a huge box on my front porch. "Wow, the box is here, I'll just look and see who it's from and I can tell what it is." I thought. I looked and the address label and it was from a repairsomething.com type place. Now my wheels are spinning because maybe he has gotten one over on me... hhmm.

Alas, no, he has not, I realized it was the part for my washing machine that has been leaking for over a year. While I am grateful to have my machine fixed (I had to keep a tray in front of the thing to catch the water that would run out.), I just did not see this as a surprise for me. It was merely a maintenance item for the house. He, on the other hand, saw it as a big thing for me, I would not have to pour out the water every time I washed a load of clothes.

Now here is where I REALLY messed up. We go out to eat with my folks, he is there first and when we got there I say something very dumb like "ha, ha, that is not a surprise for me." [Please learn from this, ladies] He, of course, gets his feelings hurt and gets mad because his wife can't see that he was doing the man thing and fixing a problem in the house. And it was down hill for the entire meal.

I should see that his efforts to fix something are his way of helping/giving to me. I should have 'painted' that smile on and been gracious and happy with my husband's display of duty/love to me.

My challenge this week was to choose to be joyful at those times when we usually choose to scorn and disapprove. Well I have already blown that, but the good news is, just like His mercies are new every morning, I can start anew.

BTW, I did apologize and then I helped him put it on the washing machine yesterday. We have washed 2 loads and there is no water on the floor. Thank you John! I love you.

Are you his helper?

The title is a throw back to the book "Are you my mother". A little bird pops from his shell, alone in the nest he goes to find his mother. He asks all those in his path "Are you my mother?" At the end a Snort puts the bird back in his nest and his mother shows up. I guess I am praying for God to be our Snort... to put us back in our nest... only this time to see if we are the helper God has created us to be.

In class we discussed what a helper is... someone to encourage, trust, confide in and most important to come along side or assist.

How are we doing? Were we taught to assist our husbands? Did growing up in our generation influence the way we treat our husbands? Honestly, when was the last time a TV show portrayed a capable, hard working, wise father? The Cosby Show, 7th Heaven? Most were in the 60's and maybe even earlier. Leave it to Beaver and Andy Griffith Show come to my mind. Mostly men are portrayed as dumb, gluttonous, incapable men and sometimes not even existent! Have you thought about the way you treat your husband? Do you treat him like he is Ward Clever or Clark Griswold? Is the way we treat him helpful?

Also do we take a few minutes to actually help our husbands? I have to admit that there is something at my home I have waited almost 4 years for my husband to do... My thoughts were... "I'm gonna nag him forever about this. I can't believe he hasn't done that yet. I am over it, it can just stay that way." HHmm, that is NOT a help to my husband, really it is a selfish, self serving woman that thinks it's ok to think less of my husband when I myself am not willing to do the same thing. Truthfully, I am 100% capable of getting it done, without his help. I have just been passing judgement on him for the last 4 years. Shame on me!

God's Word says "whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence, if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things" Phil 4:8. So does that include my husband? Of course it does! He has so many ways he takes care of me and the kids, who am I that I should dwell on his failures, I am to dwell on his strengths, the whatevers... the "if there is any". I think it means if I can search my mind and find ANY shred of positive attribute in him... I am to dwell on that!

Finally we were reminded that our husbands are sinners. (See Romans 3:23) As a matter of fact, you and I are sinners. Who are we to think our husbands are anything less than ourselves, sinners. Can you really be less than a sinner anyway? And if I'm a sinner, I must be faulty, therefore I must have issues too! You mean I don't have my own pedestal from which to order my mere mortal husband around from? Well, as the Word says in Ephesians, God is head of Christ, Christ is head of the Church, and the man is head of the woman. I just don't see a pedestal there.

This week's challenge: Make at least one change to be a helper to your husband. Make sure to record it in your journal and record any changes that happen. Even if your husband doesn't notice you can rest assured that the Father does!
Let the Son shine,
Brandee

The Blueberry Patch

Last night in our Sunday night class, we learned about how just having knowledge about God's Word is like having a meal before you, only to have it behind glass. If we do not consume the Word and allow it to be the nutrients that change us, we have nothing. Just because we have memorized several Scripture and are ready to deal them out to those around us, if we have not let the same Scripture permeate us, we are not really fed, not really apart of that Scripture.
With this in mind as well as the Created to be his Helpmeet study, I thought about even one piece of Scripture, one verse. One verse can be as a blueberry patch.
As we drive to the patch, we have a particular experience, place, or challenge that will define our experience here. Soon we have zeroed in on the section of the blueberry patch that appeals to us today. Now we have gotten out of the car, and we can see the rows of bushes all with fruit pleasing to the eye. We have a general idea of the whole patch, yet will we pick a spot and start picking from there.
Now some people in the patch will wear gloves, they don't want to be stained by the process of picking blueberries, but they are here. Some will have their buckets and only take what they need. Still others will be like children, they will have stained fingers and faces, empty buckets but full tummies, from the delicious fruit.
We will all leave the same patch of blueberries and have different experiences. Just as we do with even a single Scripture in God's Word. Each numbered verse is like the whole patch of blueberries. We should be like the children and get messy, have the Word be so a part of us that it stains us and it's nutrients grow us. We should also realize that we are not able to know if the whole patch tastes the same. Someone else at the patch may have gotten smaller, sweeter berries. Yet another, large somewhat bitter berries.
Later, we will all visit the patch again, just as we do God's word. We may return to the familiar spot and see the Scripture in the same light, not changed by it this time. But I pray we will pick a different road to the patch, that we would see it from a different angle, that we would taste the fruit of a different bush. Because like a blueberry patch, one Scripture is full of sweet fruit, full of nutrients, and full of God.

Created to be his Helpmeet!

Yay, woot woot, yippie! And many other exclamations!

Here we go on a journey to learn more of what God desires of us as wives. I can't wait to see what God has planned! We have ladies from not yet married to blessed with grandchildren. Wow, Father has blessed me! I know I am going to learn from these ladies. We are all so different, in different places in our lives, yet we can still learn and grow! And we will be doing some of that learning and growing together!
As we talked tonight, I was thinking about studying God's Word with others. How we all see things in different light. I may see this something, she may see that something... And as we come together and talk about it, God's Word blooms like a beautiful flower. I am sure we will have a garden full before it's all said and done.
If you decide to follow along in person or here on the blog, I pray many blessings for you. Father has used this book and the truths within it to change and in some cases, save many marrieages. I pray you are one of them! Until next week when we discuss chapters 1-2 of Created to be his Helpmeet, Let the Son shine! Brandee
ps I just saw that they have an unabridged version of the book on cd and mp3 cd. How cool is that?
